The BITV self-assessment

The BITV self-assessment is a free web-based tool for web developers who want to make sure that the site they are developing complies with the BITV.

On the basis of an online from including the 92 test steps of the BITV-Test and providing rating and commenting options, users can assess the degree of accessibility of the respective site tested. This tool is often used by web agencies checking sites during development in order to ensure they will be fully accessible (and conform to BITV / EN 301 549).

Completed questionaires can be:

  • displayed and printed;
  • saved and continued at a later time;
  • given a password protection and made accessible to others (such as colleagues or clients).

The questionnaire is based on the BITV-Test procedure. The reliability of results depends on the familiarity with the BITV checkpoints.The self-assessment usually cannot replace an independent qualified test carried out by one of the organisations trained to carry out the BITV-Test, the BITV-Test Prüfstellen.

There are some differences compared to the BITV-Test:

  • The self-assessment presupposes that the evaluator is familiar with the website tested. It is therefore deemed unnecessary to define a page sample for testing. All assessments therefore reflect the result for the entire site.
  • Evaluators may use the self-assessment also to test a number of individual pages by creating several separate self-assessment tests.
  • The questionnaire refers to explanations and procedures also used in the BITV-Test. However, not all of the latter may be relevant for the self-assessment.
